Why a nursery?

Why a Nursery?

There has been considerable research done in recent years, both here and in the USA, into the benefits of early childhood education.  Studies of various groups of children in their formal schooling years have come up with remarkable evidence of increased academic achievement and greater emotional stability in those who have had a Nursery education.

Further studies carried out on adult groups point to enhanced success in work and higher levels of employment in those with pre-school experience.

A report in the Times Educational Supplement in October 1992, stated:

“Pre-school education can sharply reduce levels of school failure and criminality, according to American educationalist at a ‘crime concern’ conference this week.  Of those given nursery training, 67% graduated from high school, compared within 49% in a control group.  38% entered further education (compared with 21%).  50% were employed by the age of 19 compared with 32% in those without a nursery education.”

A 2004 KCC consultation document on the establishment of nursery units in the area says:

“There is considerable evidence of the beneficial impact of good quality pre-school services upon young children’s learning takes place during the first five years of life and these years play a vital role in preparing the foundation for all skills and later learning.  Nursery education and other pre-school provision can help children take advantage of what the infant or primary school has to offer when they enter full-time education.
